About Dharamshala

Known most popularly as the abode of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and headquarters of the Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamshala is a global town that receives visitors from all corners of the world. Dharamshala is also known as ‘Little Lhasa’, after the capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, ever since the Dalai Lama fled China and sought sanctuary in India, which led to the famous Tibetan uprising in 1959. It is nestled in the Kangra Valley of the Dhauladhar Range, a southern branch of the Outer Himalayas. Many treks up to the Himalayan Mountains start at or pass through Dharamshala. The calm mountain air, snowy peaks, refreshing streams, warm locals, British colonial architecture, and the Tibetan Buddhist culture serve to make Dharamshala a favourite among travellers.

When to Visit Dharamshala?

The most popular time to visit is summer (March – June), a busy time as people from the plains come here to escape the heat. It’s the most comfortable time, with highest temperature being 34° C. The monsoon season from July - September is not a great time to visit for trekking and camping, as Dharamshala receives some of the highest rainfall in India. Winters get snowy and chilly, with temperatures dropping below 0° C, but it’s a beautiful time to visit Dharamshala.
